PARIS (Reuters) - Conservative leader Nicolas Sarkozy triumphed in France's presidential election on Sunday, beating his Socialist rival Segolene Royal by a comprehensive margin and extending the right's 12-year grip on power.

Within an hour of polls closing, a calm, restrained Sarkozy pledged to represent the entire nation and heal the divisions of a bitter election campaign, praising his defeated opponent.

He also reached out to both the United States, which has had frosty relations with France since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and to European Union partners, saying he would make the fight against global warming a priority.

"To all those French who did not vote for me, I want to say that beyond political battles, beyond differences of opinion, for me there is only one France," he told cheering supporters.

With almost two thirds of ballots counted, Sarkozy had won 53.4 percent of the vote against 46.6 percent for Royal. Turnout was some 85 percent -- the highest since 1981.

I'll just say this: France has the best medical plan on the planet. It has the best pension plan on the planet. It has the best protection for workers on the planet. It may have some of the highest taxes on the planet, but they have minimal poverty and a very strict immigration policy. France is pretty much where the US needs to be heading. They are energy independent and take care of their people. The french are an intelligent bunch that don't look down on artists and intellectuals. They allow free speech and demonstrations without an overbearing police presence. They have liberal drug laws and are basically much more free than us. The US govt. could learn a lot from the French, lets just hope this conservative new president doesn't screw it up!!

P4B I knew youd be happy but their idea of conservatives is alot different then Americas.Chirac was conservative btw france has not had a liberal government in the last 12 years.This new guy Sarkozy is married but doesnt live with his wife he believes in abortion and seperation of church and state he wants less stringent rules for companies and less taxes for workers.MED your right about France its a pretty good country to live in actualy not much poverty the best health care in the world and the list goes on.Its quiet the socialist country considering the conservatives have been in power.

I can see some similarities with Iraq. "The lessons never learned are destined to repeat themselves", Amen. I guess you begin to realize not to fuck with muslim extremests in their territory, those guys don't mind dying, and they're liable to take a few of you with them, (suicide Bombers). I wonder if this whole mess (Iraq, Iran, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, all the muslim countries) could be straightened out by sending all our muslim friends who reside here, over there and bringing all the Christians out of their territories and creating basically two worlds. Hey, it wouldn't bother me to lose a few million muslims, we can always replace them with Mexicans, at least they are Christian, I see the religious wars beginning to form. I'm not really anti Muslim, but any religeous group that can't assimilate into our society needs to go to a place where they will feel happy in their Berkas, Afganistan comes to mind. I'll bet if you gave those idiots a choice of dressing like Americans or being deported to Afganistan, they'd have a new wardrobe, moch-schnell.

A little reading on the british experience in iraq (and afganistan for, that matter) would also have served him well. A little harder to believe blair was unaware of all this.
