So me and my friend were having a discussion over the quote:

but pleaded for the right to fight against
the erring world, to serve the seed from which
there grew the four-and-twenty plants that ring you.

So the seed from which there grew the 420 plants that ring you (or put you to sleep) is he speaking of weed?

It sounds like he is, but the thing is 420 was not a known 'stoner holiday' or weed reference when the book was written, so is he really talking about weed?

I don't think so, it doesn't sound like something Dante would just put in ya know? Just because something says 420 doesn't mean that it's pot related. Why would weed bring you into heaven?

The Inferno is so much cooler though.

It's a reference to the twenty four elders from the bible I believe.

Who Are the Twenty-Four Elders of Revelation? (http://members.tripod.com/lastdayscalendar/twenty_four_elders.htm)

never heard the word Paradise mentioned when referring to Dante, you talking about Milton? If we are talkign about Milton then, yeah man just check your history books, full of poets wearing 4:20 t-shirts back in the 17th century!

No, Dante wrote the Divine Comedy, a book (that poem thing I can't remember) about the Inferno, Paradise, and Purgatory? I can't remember if the third one was Purgatory. But the Inferno is the one that most people know.

ohh that's what he called heaven wasn't it, just Purgatory stuck in my head I guess, in that case, yeah 4:20 t-shirts were huge thing in the 1300s too!
