and now i gotta cancel all these plans. its ok, just really annoying. i hate the last minute crap.

Oh god I feel for you. That shit has happend to me more times than I can count!! WORK SUCKS MAN!!! WORK FUCKING SUCKS!!!!
I go to college full time and work full time...I had been asking my work for a weekend day off for like 2 months because I REALLY needed a day off between work and school.
They wouldn't do it..kept saying they would..never did.
So ya know what I do? I call in sick...cause I really needed a day. Turns out, THREE other people called in sick too.
I'd say thats a good sign that my work is overwhelming us.
SO now they bumped me down to 3 days a week instead of 4 so that I can get a weekend day off, which is nice...but too bad they couldn't accomodate to my schedule so that I could work 4 days a week and have a day off between.
Sorry for my rant...it just sounds like your work is a lot like mine, and juding by the stupidity of your co-worker who was supposed to cover...It REALLY sounds like my work.
I feel for you bro, hang in there.

I'm a psych major...and I'm only taking 12 credits and I do the minimal to do alright..while still partying and getting fucked up all the time.
It just sucked though because I have school at 9am mon-thurs...and up until I called in sick I was working at 6am fri-sat-sun and working at noon on Monday.
It sucks man...

Haha, that's why I never go to my work unless I absolutely have to. I also never answer the phone for them unless I want to pick up a shift. They asked me about it before, and I just told them if I want to pick up a shift, they can reach me, if not, I won't be answering my phone.
They are good at guilting people into working, so I ignore their calls completely.
I would be pissed at the idiot who went in to early.

Yep, thats what I do. I don't even go in on my days off unless I have a really good excuse as to why I can't help them if they are shorthanded(which is often)..and yeah I don't answer any phone calls I don't know...cause sometimes they try to trick you...and I don't answer my co workers phone calls ever either, no matter how good of a friend they are outside of work...they have to leave me a message..cause you just NEVER know.

No shit, I hate when you get a call from your friend "Sam" and when you answer he asks if you can work today. I don't even bother with good excuses anymore. My bosses know I hate my job and if I'm not on the schedule I'm prob not coming in. When they ask I tell them I have to do something and they drop it at that now.
The eventually got the hint. My job isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. There are also to managers I get along well with, so I also go and bitch to them and ask them to tell the Store Manager for me so I don't tell her to go fuck her self and lose my job.
I have anger problems when it comes to these shitty jobs you get while in school.

Man your job sounds so much like mine..
Yeah last weekend when I called in and 3 other people called in...they didn't even try to get me to come in.
They know I won't do it. It sucks though, someone calls in sick to my work nearly daily...
Its sad though..some people work at my job their whole life...
..I make 9.50 an hour though so I guess it's not that bad.

I just got a raise up to 8.10. Our cost of living may be less, I'm not sure. It is decent pay compared to what else there is around here.
People call out at my job a lot too. And than those who did show up get bitched at for falling behind. I have gotten into screaming matches on a regular basis at my job. I swear, they should want us to all show up stoned. They just recently stoped walking all over the resturant telling back of house to "smile."
I do smile at how poorly the resturant is run sometimes.
The dreaded morning shift has been the demise of my work-life.

Wow, JE, my job is kinda similar. I had to put my foot down, and trust me, I did it early.
We're supposed to fire people if they no-call, no-show, but we kept having some associates who wouldn't come in or call. They wouldn't fire them, pissed me off so bad. To make things worse, I was the one they called to cover the shifts
Very early they learned not to do that. I won't answer the phone unless I want to, and even if I'm there and they try and guilt me, I'll tell 'em to piss off (not literally).
What's worse is we've got these new communist-like store managers who want everyone to close all the areas and leave at the same time, as opposed to cleaning your own area and leaving. It's bullshit, I'm always the first one out too >: (
I've never gotten in a yelling match (yet), but I do oftentimes throw non-breakable shit around and get mad at others... it's stress, college + work = bullshit.
I was just fired for one of those "no call, no shows." It gets me every time! I've smartened up after the fourth time being terminated for my laziness. From now on my application will specify my indifference for the morning shifts. 6 A.M is too early! That's why I quit going to school!

If one of my friends called me from their phones or something to get me to come into work, I would fucking EXPLODE!!! Straight up, I would yell at them so loud, then I would yell at my manager and be like "FUCK YOU MOTHER FUCKER!"
Well not really, but maybe if they wanna fuck around.

Once you have the day off the first rule is, dont show up at work for any reason, or answer the phone if they call you. If it's understood when you leave work the pervious day that another person is covering your shift the following day, they cant fire you for not answering the phone. All you have to say is i'm off today that guys covering my shift, if he fucks up, that's on him, not you.

My job sucks as well:
- We can't use the employee door.
- At every available chance they can get they will screw you out of break time. (5 hour shift is 30 minutes break. They will frequently give you shifts that are 4 hours and 45 minutes long.)
- If a customer recieves a coupon and does not want it, and gives it to either me or a co worker we have to throw them away. If we accept the coupons we are "stealing".
- We can't talk to each other when working.
*edit*
I almost forgot about my sweet employee discount!
10% off one thing three times a year.
Fucking awesome.

Get a better job, why would you wanna work for a place that intentionally screw you out of a break, just to save 2 dollars.

I have worked 8 hour shifts without a break before. I never eat at work, and when we are understaffed, I can't afford to take one... I usually go to the break room and smoke a cigg in the bathroom for a few minutes every hour. Or sit down for a sec and eat a biscuit I stole. We also aren't allowed to eat anything for free...

Have you worked a part-time type job before? It isn't exactly easy to find one that will treat you well. I haven't been able to find one yet at least.

I love my job.
Buisness is usually slow during spring and summer, and i spend a lot of time in the yard getting stoned with a work colleague. Today we smoked a couple of joints filled with Sensi star which is a strong indica. It was funny as hell though as we couldn't stop laughing at every little thing. It's certainly hard not to act stoned in front of the boss lol!

We all get stoned at my work...but yeah it's still a lame job.
I guess it's not THAT bad..the only lame part is my co workers with bad work ethic.
Getting health insurance...a bonus every 3 months...401K..and annual raises..I suppose that isn't that bad.
Plus were all stoners.
Still though, a jobs a job. :(
I'm on my break right now getting stoned...
