I've noticed a lot of cuffufle lately about the conservative government cutting quite a bit of funding to the arts community. Yesterday I saw a a woman who was an artist protesting against this and berrating the government for cutting the funding.
But personally, I just don't see why they should support the arts. When I saw that lady up there, arguing about the "disgracefull government" cutting the arts funding, I had quite a different perspective. I didn't see somebody up there advocating for public rights, I saw somebody up there raving about personal enitlement. These funds aren't just some big pot in the government's house, they are OUR MONEY. She's not asking for the government's money, she's asking for MY money and for YOUR money. And why should I be under obligation to fund her atistic pursuits? We have a medical system that desperately needs fixing, a weak military, fiscal imbalance in the provincial transferes, and an education system seriously in need of a revamp. Is there some reason investing in her artistic endeavors will be for the greater good of all Canadians?
Anyway, that's my reasoning on the subject. If somebody has a different opinion I'm totally open to it, I just don't see any reason for public funds to be supporting the arts right now.
