in another thread someone posted a video about the most important picture ever taken. it was a picture of galaxies 78 billion light years away.

a light year is the distance light travels in a year. light reaches earth in about 8 seconds from the sun. in 8 friccin seconds it travels 93 million miles!

now just for the sake of my stoned ass having to do hard math lets say it take 10 seconds. 10 goes into a min 6 times. a min goes into an hour 60 times. an hour goes into a day 24 times. a day goes into a year 365 times.

so 6 x 60 x 24 x 365= 3,153,600... 3,153,600 x 93 million(i sure as shit am not doin that math)

that means light travels 3,153,600 x 93 million miles in a year. now multiply that times 78 billion and that tells us how many miles away these galaxies are. farther than comprehendible.

ok so to the point. for us to take that picture the image would have had to travel that far. so in theory it would take forever for us to receive the image and now that galaxy could look completely different or even be nonexistent.

see while the image was traveling time keeps goin and things keep changing.

atleast thats my theory. wow i really hope someone feels me on this one lol

Dude goto google, type in speed of light and you get 186,282.397 miles a second. So im so lost right now with your math equations. I dont think earth time has anything to do with light time. And besides it takes I think 8 MINUTES, not seconds to reach the earth.

I saw this video too, and it was a mind fuck cause I was blown out. But im sure the Hubble didnt take a regular picture. I think it used some sort of Frequency instead.

*Edit* whoa im so wrong. I gotta calculate how many miles is in a light year then realize that the 78 billion is light years not miles. Damnit this could take a while.

*Edit 2* Ok i see where you got your earth time from. Ill round to 180,000 miles.

186,000 miles second * 60 seconds minute * 60 minutes hour * 24 hours/day * 365 days year = 5,865,696,000,000 miles a light year.

TIMES 78 Billion = 457,524,288,000,000,000,000,000 miles or light miles I dont fuckin know away.

And all I know is that 9 zeroes = a billion. So tell me how to say that number.

ya earth is 93 million from the sun, and i divided that by what the dude above me said for the speed of light, and i got 500 seconds, which is 8.32 minutes

31 556 926 seconds in a year times the speed it goes in a second is 5,878,487,289,132 miles....but i forgot what we were talking about so..........

Thinking about that sort of stuff is mind boggleing. It's crazy how long it takes light to reach the rest of the universe. Every time we look at a star, it's really the way the star looked thousands of years ago. Looking into the sky is pretty much looking at the past in a sense.

thats exactly wat i was getting at bro... see since that is how it looked that long ago we could be looking at something that is nonexistent now.

so if there was life somewhere way out there, we would be existing at the same time, but they are in the past. or something

Yea man. Another thing that always facinated me was that if it was possible to look at earth with a high power telescope (which is currently impossible because the telescope would have to see earth faster than the speed of light) from venus or something. When you saw earth it would be in the a different era. Maybe now it would be the 60's or 70's. We could look back and see who shot kennedy.

affasd - "quote"

see thats where i kinda get confused. if they are there right now but they are in the past... then are they there or were they there but arent now or were they there then and there now? idk wtf im talkin bout lol... my head hurts. but we could never travel to these places because the only way to get there would be to travel very fast but u still wouldnt know if the planet would be there when u got there because its from the past? and it would suck to fly into a planet that u never saw goin the speed of light lol

holy shit! thats like time travel... but like seeing into the past instead of being there.

It means that if there is life out there...if...they would be in the present time. the same time as earth. It's just that the universe is so huge it takes light a long time to travel between planets and stars. So lets say A person from earth looks at a star in the sky that isn't really a star, its a planet. On this planet that the person from earth is looking at is an 'alien' who is similarily looking at which he beleives is a star in the sky, but it is really earth. Basically they are both looking at eachothers planets. The light from the stars they are looking at could be anywhere from 10 to thousands of years old because light travels so far between these planets which are billions of miles away. So both the planets (the human and the alien) are both in present time, but the light they see coming from the planet they are looking at is really from the fpast.

For all we know the sun could have died 7 minutes ago! It hasnt, but still. It could have.

Also, as this is to do with space, they've found a new planet in another place blah blah blah, i think it's closer to the sun than us, it's temps are between 0c and 40c and they think it's very possible there could be life.

It was in the paper - so it MUST be true ... hahahahahahah.

Anyway.
