Okay, I got this idea after reading the jamaica thread and getting all mad that people were saying stuff like "Don't expect it to be civilized, like here in america"

Though it may be a simple statement that wasn't supposed to have any serious underlying message it sure made my blood boil. So I started looking around the net for info on Jamaica, like ive done quite a few times before while looking for a new place to visit (mostly based on where i can get good weed cheaply and easily)

Well I found some great sites where organizations, mostly churchy bullshit, go there and find people living in these rotted dilapidated shacks and build them a house, which would be more like a single or double wide trailer here, nothing fancy but immeasurably better than what they currently have. You can donate something like $2600 to pay for the whole thing but that seemed way too impersonal for me, besides that kind of stuff is just meant to be an altruistic ego booster for celebrity assholes so they can look good and get a break on their taxes.

I want to volunteer my time, energy and good will instead of my green paper. I have tools because i currently work as a framer and have a little bit of experience building houses, enough to build a small trailer size house with some degree of confidence.

For some time I have been looking for something like this but I didn't want to go to Africa or somewhere else that would be a little too remote for me. So at first glance this seems to be the perfect scenario, go to an island paradise and help people out at the same time doing exactly what I do now. I really hope it pans out.

Its perfect for me because I hate the world, at least the one run by corporations and the media so this would be an escape and a chance to decompress from all the bullshit of the modern American life.

Wish me luck and I encourage everyone here who can to check out the volunteer opportunities available, some even provide lodging and will pay you to work, even though that seems to counter the spirit of the idea.

If I go I will be providing all the tools i can, like a saw and nail gun and generator and compressor. and hopefully will get some cheap room and board if none is provided. I don't care if I make any money as long as I have what I need to survive.

Down with altruism and up with peace love and generosity.

In August I'm going to the Carribean, Nevis to be exact to build houses for the locals there. It's for some church thing which I'm not alll about but I live for helping out those that need help. Odds are I won't be coming back either!:D

Wow. This is cool. I am preparing to go to Central America to help out schools down there.

I am familiar with Central America, so I know what I am getting into.

I will not be coming back to the USA unless it is to visit family.

Good luck to all of you!

Hmmm that sounds awesome, I'm gonna look into some alternative places too, but jamaica is number 1 on my list so far. but shit man, the carribean would be pimp as fuck.

i'm proud of you!
there are zillions of great organizations out there that will happily send you abroad to for the greater good. unfortunatly a lot of them are Missionary stuff. But in my experiences, church organizations really have it together when it comes to volunteering. Churches tend to get more funding and do a good job of taking care of legal issues....i dont know why that is.... but thats just my experience. i suggest you look at something linked to the Unitarian Universalist church which is sort of an agnostic, paganish, neo-christian church that supremely embraces all beliefs and welcomes questions and non-believers. My ex boyfriend's parents were very close to thier Unitarian church and they traveled to Bolivia twice to build homes and install plumbing in local infrastructure. it changed thier lives. and they are moving back to Bolivia permanently in 2008.
Jamaica sounds like a real keen place to begin! I mean...blue beaches and maryjane and doing something for the greater good? that sounds most stellar! My friend Madi spend a few weeks in Jamaica and told me that there are several blocks of really nice infrastructure and wealth concentration-which are where all the tourists stay. But once you get out of that area, you run into desolate slums. there a huge income gap problem there. so I think Jamaica sounds PERFECT!
so many people these days get caught up in thier lives that they have no time or opportunity to seriously volunteer. so act while you can. Like I said, i'm proud and supremely glad to see others interested in volunteering. Good luck and peace and love. I hope you smoke a lot down there.
