Chief: At least 20 dead in Virginia Tech campus shootings - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/16/vtech.shooting/index.html)

...

How could someone do that? It's like Columbine all over again, except more people. The toll has risen to 22 people dead...

Anyone on the boards affected by this insane tragedy, my heart goes out to you...

Its another terrible targedy in American schools! Why do the US government insist on having such ridiculous gun laws! How many kids need to die before they will change? Why do these shootings only ever seem to happen in America? You would think they would put 2 + 2 together!

Of course its the guns without the guns those people would be still alive! Granted the person that did it must have been fucked up but without the guns this would probably never have happened. Why does this only seem to regularly occur in America?

Its not the guns. If it wasn't for him having whatever mental condition telling him to do this, it would've never happened. Even if guns were illegal, do you know how easy it is to make homemade bombs or even get in contact with an illegal arms dealer?

how did i know a response like this was coming. coming from someone who smokes weed and sees what kind of damage having weed illegal causes. imagine if all guns were illegal, that would create ten times the crime here in the US.

why do these things happen only in the US i dont konw, but its damn sure not because of our gun laws.

you know i really hate to tell you this... but the uk has made guns 'illegal', and crime hasn't decreased, infact it increased... outlawing guns does absolutely nothing, except possibly take an innocent person's only defense against a gun wielding maniac....

it's not hard to get a gun, even if they're illegal... you can buy one on the street for just a couple hundred.... there's just so many guns on the planet, no matter where you look you can find one...

matter of fact, if you know the right people you can even buy them CHEAPER then they're sold for in the stores.... since all they did was steal them from a buisness, or someone's house...

People will kill people whether they have a gun or not... Are we gonna outlaw knives? Hands can kill you, why shouldn't we chop those off?

It's not the weapon, it's the user...

Thanks for pointing this out... /sarcasm

Exactly, when you outlaw guns you prevent decent people who register and safely use guns from having protection, drug dealers, and murders don't and can't buy guns legally. This kid was just crazy, like Chris Rock said in 99 "What ever happened to crazy, What you can't be crazy no more?"

hey, if i could erase guns from existance, i would... they do more harm then goood... but since they are here.... the only other choice is to arm yourself for the chance that you might need it...

accidents happen by stupid people.... don't keep the gun loaded, keep a lock on it, or in a gun safe... yeah shit happens, but most of the accidental shootings could have been prevented with the most basic gun saftey or keeping it locked and in the top of a closet, away from small children.

Never, in this case the media is having a field day. Every single day all we see in the US is story after story about the "crisis at the border" and the war in Iraq, now for the next week or two those two issued wont take a backseat, but will completely disappear, just like they did when anna nichole died. You cant say i havnt got a point, especially with all these shootings around London.

Making guns illegal wouldnt change ANYTHING. Cannabis is illegal - does that stop it being EVERYWHERE? No, and it'd be the same with guns.

So you saying its because guns are legal, is completely completely wrong.

I personally don't have a gun. My parents do though, and they keep it LOCKED and in a LOCKED cabinet. I live far away enough from the city to avoid trouble, but if you've ever had a gun pointed in your face (I have on 4 occasions when I went into the city) you wish right then and there that you had something to protect yourself... Wishing the world would stop using guns isn't going to do anything at that point, Buzz.

BUZz_UK: I don't think ANYBODY here is saying we should all carry guns. We all know that is a stupid argument.

What I believe LIP and a lot of people are saying is the following (what I personally believe) -- Gun ownership should be legal, and 100% controlled by the government. You should be able to go into a gun shop and apply for a firearm permit. Then after a background check and wait period, they'll sell you a legal gun. You must have the permit on you at all times if you wish to carry the gun outside your home. If you are found with the gun but no permit, it would get impounded immediately, no questions asked. In order to keep and renew your gun permit you must prove that you are taking proper precautions in your home by locking up the weapon and all ammunition.

If you make it legal and controlled to own a gun, then there will be no reason for illegal/stolen/black market weapons. Then less 17yo kids will be shooting up their crack dealers.

Make guns 100% illegal, and only criminals will have guns.

"Crazy" seems to be all too prominent in the US.

I always liked Chris Rocks idea of making bullets â?¬5,000 dollars each that way you can still have your guns but its gonna cost you if you wanna kill somebody.

BTW I wouldn't know where to go to find a gun over here. None of my dealers or even their dealers dealers would carry or sell firearms, I would have more chance of finding a flying pig!

Buzz made a good point, your not going to carry a gun down the street with you for fear of being shot unless you live in a messed up area..There are plenty of other precautions you can take...l

Most people im sure only keep guns in the US for home security, so why buy a gun when you could get a decent security system..

Damn, beat me to it lol. I was gonna come home and post a thread on it. But yeah that was fucked up, I was in school when a teacher came in and told us to turn the t.v. on CNN. I was like "damn, this is even worse than Columbine". It honestly scares me. Can't even be safe trying to go to school to get an education...:cursing: I think a law needs to be passed that allows teachers to be able to carried small handguns or something man because that is just pathetic. I hope the shooter burns in hell BAD.

It'll be interesting to see how this story develops, if they ID the guy responsible for it.

Anyone else looking at the bomb/drug dogs sniffing around campus? I wonder if they found weed, what would they do?

"It's okay, we're just looking for bombs... Smoke it before the next set of dogs comes through here" Imagine what a huge break that'd be...

to anyone defending legal guns in this thread, WHAT THE FUCK? YOU RETARDS. If he had a knife, do you honestly think he could've stabbed 42 people?! Get fucking real, you only have to look at the amount of shooting deaths to see your country has gone wrong on the gun laws.

i think you miss the point

if you're going to impose severe gun laws, you must make it so that criminals cannot get them. for that to happen guns would practically have to be completely removed from society. and that's impossible. it would make it harder for criminals to get them, but it would make it hardest for honest folk to get them to defend themselves. the amount of smuggling would be unbelievable

don't get me wrong, i don't see any reason for assault weapons, and guns that have no other purpose than killing people to be legal; and i'd like the corrupt manufacturers who cater to criminals to be put behind bars

but in this case it doesn't seem that assault weapons were even used.

you could easily make the point that if another student had a gun then they could have taken the perp out and ended it; the length of time this went on, and the helplessness of the students, faculty, even police is what is staggering me

personally, i'd like all guns to be illegal and gone from the earth. i'd gladly hunt with a bow and arrow. i'd also remove atom bombs, chemical weapons, hell, everything that is made for killing people. the problem is that we can't do it.

so what do you do? if you outlaw guns those restrictions tend to come upon the people who would use them for protection, who acquire them LEGALLY. criminals and psychopaths can easily find them on the black market, anywhere in the world.

i think that the reason we have these killings in America has a lot more to do with our culture than our gun laws. i really can't spell it out, i can't put my finger on it, but there is a something severe and inhuman in our culture. in opposition to somewhere like canada, that is just more at ease. there is no ease in america. it is a land of dissatisfaction and a constant demand to succeed, succeed, succeed. all that being said, i don't claim to have my finger on the pulse. i don't know if i can really explain it, and i don't think we yet know why this person did what he did. if anything, i'd say that we, as a people, have lost a lot of our vision of the beauty and sanctity of human life. we've traded it for sex (and an oppressive demand to be attractive), money, popularity, and power

i think gun laws are important and necessary, but i doubt that that is the issue here

all my words are cheap, because there's nothing i can say to encapsulate the lives of these people who are now no longer living.

R.I.P. your lives were beautiful, and so will your memories

don't keep the gun loaded, keep a lock on it, or in a gun safe

multiple locks; multiple safes, amo in one, gun in the other

i would support legislation to require home inspection and certification of "necessary standards of gun safety" like this. i don't see that it should be legal to leave guns lying around

Most people im sure only keep guns in the US for home security, so why buy a gun when you could get a decent security system..

sorry to those who pointed out this thread isn't about gun control/us problems... but i can't let this go unanswered....

security systems are for burglars.... if someone's coming to your house to murder you, they're not gonna care if an alarm goes off... they got more then enough time to kick in the door, run in, shoot you (and you're probably gonna make it easier on them by runnning straight to the door) and get out...

security systems work on fear... they don't actually keep your home safe.... they detour burglars who could move on to an easier target...

and what about places of buisness, or being caught on the street? i dunno about you, but if someone's about to kill you, i'd rather die trying to get the first shot off, then just stand there like an idiot and be shot... it's a last resort oppurtunity... if someone's just trying to rob you, and doesn't seem like they're gonna shoot you, then it's best to not pull out a gun... but if you can tell they're intent is to rob and shoot (and you can...) then you might as well try to save yourself...

but you have to understand how a moderate has to look at things... if they let certain things slide, they get countless emails and call-outs on the forums for showing favoritism... awhiel back they were actually pretty understanding over situations like this... but too many childish people screamed and cried they were unfair... so they started doing everything by the book.

I think you gun grabbers are missing the big picture. The number of people that have been disarmed and massacred by their own governments is exponentially higher than the number of people that have been killed by common criminals armed with guns. The real threat comes from agents of the State, not Jamal mugging you for your wallet. This should be the main focus of any anti-victim-disarmament argument.

That being said, Having a gun on Virginia Tech campus was a crime. Therefore, students couldn't defend themselves. All they could do is call 911 and wait for the cops who stayed outside and hid behind trees instead of trying to find the gunman. Virginia Tech's ban on guns may draw legal fire - Roanoke.com (http://www.roanoke.com/news/nrv/wb/xp-21770)

If the students were allowed to be own a firearm the casualities would be reduced greatly.

i just realized i haven't actually said anything about the tragedy, i don't want anyone to think i'm an ass or don't care.

i lost a brother, and when everyoen told me they're sorry and they offer their condolonces, i obviously cared, but it didn't help much.... so i really don't know what to say to those who have suffered... i do care, and i wish it never happened... but caring doesn't actually help the heart ache (atleast for me)

so to those who suffered don't think i don't care and was just trying to make gun control arguments... ignoring the pain was how i dealt with it, so if that's how someone else chooses to, i perfer to ignore the subject as well.... there's nothing worse then when you want to forget the pain, and everyone just keeps reminding you...

it also has alot to do with not understanding tho... i'd love at this point to be able to 'explain' it so it doesn't seem so senseless... but the fact is, it is 100% senseless... there is no explination, and that hurts all that much more...

We can move posts, Slip, but P4B dealt with that one above yours in the way he felt was best, considering its angry, insulting commentary, which in that case involved deleting it. Good decision, if you ask me.

This Virginia Tech thing is so heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for those kids and their parents, including the shooter and his family, too. I have a son who's in college just over the state line in North Carolina, and with tensions always high on college campuses at this time of year anyway, it just hits awfully close to home. I dunno, Skink.. In a way I kind of agree, dude.. I don't want to detract from the absolute fuckin' horror of this event - I'm just as sickened and worried about it as the next guy - but it is true that thousand of innocent people die every single day, and that they could be saved if a few rich, white, middle-to-upper-class Americans or Brits decided to sign this document instead of that one. You hardly ever see much outrage about that, simply because either it doesn't make great news or people just get bored of it.
