If you're into short stories, I'd pick up "The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe." It's a really fun read. You'll find yourself cracking up after the first paragraph.

titus groan, gormenghast, and titus alone - all by m. peake (the first two contain great imagery, the last gets a bit tedious but is still worth reading)
the amber series - by zelazny (the later ones are a bit strained, different writer, but as fantasy worlds go there are few better)
the haunting of hill house - by s. jackson (one of the simplest and greatest ghost stories every written)

if you like 'spiritual' books, i would suggest the books from Carlos Castaneda. They describe his apprenticeship with a yaqui indian sorcerer called Don Juan, and the experiences he had with states of nonordinary reality. This books are a MUST have for anybody interested in the nature of reality, perception, etc.
For me, the best one is Journey to Ixtlan, followed by Tales of Power, and then A Separate Reality. There is a lot of other ones, but this are good enough. Im sure you will love them!

PS. Im sure the authors of the Matrix movies did read all the books of Castaneda... there is a LOT of similarities between them... specially concerning the 'unreal' nature of the reality, what is known in a lot of another religions/cultures.

Probably youre talking about The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Here in Brasil we have not a good view about him, as he seems (and frequently shows himself like) a charlatan with makes money with self-help books disguised in spirituality. But his books did make a lot of success in another countries, as the people dont know him as we do (as he is brasilian).
Note Im talking only about the character of the author, so i will not flame his books before reading them.

I've read it, and I'd agree with you. But, I also hold the same opinion of Castaneda.
Bookwise, I'd recommend
100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Marquez
The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey
Girls by Nic Kelman
and others...

indeed... ive read a lot of bad things about Castaneda too, and thats why i didnt flame the books of Paulo Coelho. The writer himself may be bad, but his books may be good. In both cases.

Dude, The Matrix draws from Plato's metaphor of the cave.
It's kinda hard to explain, so wikipedia it.
i know this Plato's Cave. But he was not the only people to think about this... Don Juan, the indian sorcerer referred in the books, teaches that what we call reality is not real, but only a representation, and those who realizes it can use it for its own advantage, doing thing aparently impossible (what is called sorcery), exactly what happens after Neo knows he is in the Matrix, and not in the 'real' world.
There is a lot of another similarities too... but they are too many to list here.
PS. The orangeman's sugestion of the Cannabible is very good too! Buy them all!

Exactly. And yea, he probably is a fake, as his kind of ''spirituality'' is kinda...weird..
Anyways the book was somehow entertaining lol that's why
