Diatomite is a sedimentary rock primarily composed of the fossilized remains of unicellular fresh water plants known as diatoms.
Thats what I copied from some website. I bought it at the hydro store near my house because it came reccomended from the guy at the counter, so far so good.

May I suggest "NONE" (physical plant support only) be added to your list.
I was once very active on these forums because I very much enjoy conversing with people that share my passion for this plant.
If interested, I can share here some of the "tricks" learned through my experiences and experniments.
cheers for this community,
Alaric

well I grow my lettuce in starter+ 2" netpot-dwc raft, or just the starter cube, in sawdust trough...
how do you propose to use "none"
As far as sharing your tips...Why do feel the need to ask? Go ahead! I personally love to learn old school tricks of the trades. Peace, and Welcome back. latewood

sawdust? no shit, like yellow pine leftover from building? how exactly is it used? doesn't the dust fall through the net pot and into the water?

Well I use it in a 2'x100'x4" deep trough to grow lettuce.
you have to get sawdust that is more chips, then dust. 3mm-7mm, Or it stays too wet.
It can be mixed between 40-60 % with rice husks, or peat...just a variety of the list above. I will get you a little more info or just go to hygronomics.com and look in the gallery, at the different commercial setups of our members and friends. Peace
