Wow, people can be pretty fucking stupid. This lady thinks she can exercise some kind of control over the beliefs of another human being. As if she can yell at him and have him believe in something that he doesn't believe is real, or threaten him into believing in something that he doesn't believe is real. I mean, it's as if she were saying "You're a Democrat?! No, you're not getting anything for Christmas until you convince yourself that Republicanism is more logical!"

I don't know where parents get this idea that they have to indoctrinate their children into any belief system they hold. Let your kids make up their own minds about the world.

Catholicism is almost enough to make you go athiest, i'm a born and raised Catholic, but at this point religion is seemingly bullshit to me. I believe in God, but not the way man has made it out to be. I don't belive that God is this great being who we are supposed to worship, humor, and try to keep within the requirements set by the church in order to possibly obtain a reward of salvation at the end of our lives. I believe God is a great almighty being, not in that sense though. Man made religion, religion causes bad things to happen, wars and such. Not what God really wants us to be doing. Anyway thats my :twocents: , I tend to go on rants sometimes

Catholicism is almost enough to make you go athiest

indeed... i know a lot of people who is atheist because of the Catholicism. unfortunately, people judges religion by the behavior of the religious people, instead of the religion itself. Many thing catholic (and christian too) people do and say, mainly ministers, bishops, priests, etc, are very contrary to what Jesus said. And the people, who prefers do the wrong, follows the 'authority' of its ministers to keep doing the wrong, instead following the teachings of Jesus himself. Sad but true...

Fucking bitch. Christmas is NOT just about jesus. My folks and I celebrate christmas to bring family, unity, and happiness that only comes around once a year. The rest of the year everyone is so tied up, but x-mas is about family, and bringing the world together to unite for one day, ONE DAY out of the year.

We don't give a fuck about jesus. Fuck him and the bible. You don't need half a brain to figure out the ridiculasness behind the the truth in the bible.

The bible is a good story about how to treat your fellow human being with kindness. It's a good story to me, although I do find it funny they sacrifice sheeps to god and in the same book, it says, "thou shall not kill." Some people call it a gift to the gods, but if you take a human being, place a dish under his neck and slice them open, watch their body twitch and drain of blood, is called murder.

so yeah maybe you need to get a little more educated on the bible. you know, the whole part about where there are two completly differnt sections( Old and New testament) that were also written and followed by two differnt peoples. hmm, i dunno but it seems to me that the whole ignorance is bliss thing really manifest itself when talking about religon

okey doky here you go.

page 105 for my bible. Exodus 35:2 states anyone working on the Sabbath is to be put to death. "six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death" Why not kill everyone that works on sundays huh :D

page 85 on my bible. Exodus 21:7 you'll find the daughter slavery bit. I suggest reading at least the first few lines of chapter 21. little piece for those that don??t have bibles. AHEM "If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing"

pg 1193 for my bible Corinthians 11:14 ??Doth not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a shame unto him.? Seems familiar huh, Jesus anyone :wtf:

Heres the rebellious son one, sorry I can't remember exactly where it's located in the bible, but i had it written down from a while ago, never sourced it.

20.And they shall say unto the elder of the city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.
21. And all the men of the city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thouh put evil.

Using the bible as a moral context, or taking it seriously is stupid. Like I said you can't use some stuff in the bible, and leave other stuff out.

Personally I believe in God, the Bible and Church though I dont.

The bible is THE BOOK, it is the book of the land. It's holy thus it has to be basically absolute. A commitee of people wrote the bible, committee of people, over a long time. It is human made, god or jesus didnt write it. All that stuff I posted is right in the bible, I didn't change anything around. The bible is hypocritical and contradictaory. One passage it says treat everyone like your brother, then a few pages over it says hebrew slaves have to serve you for 7 years or something like that. You can't take the bible literally or use it as a moral code.

Stemis516

Well, if it's not literally true, and most of it seems to be mythological in origin, what's the point in trusting any of it at all? Yeah, I realize there are some good bits of general moral advice in there, but there's a lot of morally disgusting crap too, which God should have edited out of his "holy" book. The Bible promotes slavery, sexism, homophobia and animal sacrifice! And that's just in the first couple books... As far as I'm concerned, any book that promotes those things is not a reliable guide for morality.

If I'm capable of going through the Bible and picking out the grossly immoral bits myself, what's the point of using the book in the first place? That means I already have a functioning morality, which I am using to judge the passages myself, and which seems to be vastly superior to the type of morality that the writers of the Bible had several thousands of years ago. It's an interesting historical document, sure, but there's little evidence that any of it is actually true and even less evidence that it is a reliable guide to morality.

If you're going to go through and cherry-pick the good bits to follow while ignoring the bad ones, you might as well use Mein Kampf as your guide to morality. You'll be throwing most of that book out the window too.

Jesus denounces the Old Testament and becomes the "New Covenant" and explains how the rules and practices of the old testament are no longer applicable.....hence why christians dont promote things like slavery or have to eat a kosher meal

and just because something isnt meant to be taken literally doesnt mean its a myth.....there are different styles of writing used throughout the bible that the reader must recognize....seriosuly, read Revelation or the Book of Daniel and take all that literally without doing any background research.....you'll get nowhere.....but just because we dont take it literally doesnt mean we cant learn from it....as long as we know the style of the writing and the circumstances surrounding the author we can better understand the text

GIVE THIS MAN A PRIZE :D Well said.

Seriously, from what im hearing i'd guess none of you have actually read any of the bible...

I'm not christian but i know the few christians say that the Bible is 100% accurate...it's religious language. Religious language is designed to be emotive and evoke feelings. It's supposed to convey an overall meaning and lessons on how to live. How could it possibley be totally accurate account of what happened when it was written over many years after the events.

Well, if it's not literally true, and most of it seems to be mythological in origin, what's the point in trusting any of it at all?

Firstly, God didn't write the Bible, so if its wrong then humans are to blame. And secondly, of course some things in the bible can't be proved to have happened. But there's independant evidence that a man named Jesus, born in Nazareth, was crucified by Pontious Pilate. And if you think that scarcely 50 years later there's accounts of Christian martyrs in Rome, and 250 years after that Christianity becomes the official religion of the Roman Empire. How can you explain that unless something pretty big had happened.

As Stemis said, Jesus himself told people to ignore the Old Testament and its crazy laws.

At the end of the day, it's a pretty good guide to morality. Sure there are some dodgy bit that don't really fit in with the world today, but think of it like this...would you really expect a book written about life today to make sense in 2000 years time. The idea is to take the lessons and apply them to the world we live in now. And whatever you may think most of us are unavoidabley effected by Christian Ethics because we live in a largely Christian society.

Wow this post took a long time. I really dont mind either way :D I just like theological discussion.

the bible is hardly fiction in most of its parts, alot of it can be historically verified from other sources that i bet even you would consider valid

although what i have a feeling you refering to by fiction is the fact that jesus rose, blah blah blah and is the savior or what not and ya....that comes down to faith so its perfectly valid if you believe that part is fiction...in fact at this point in my life so do i

i just dont understand why your trying to come down on me when im simply trying to help you understand this thing as a book so when you argue it in the future you dont make urself look stupid....im not some crazy born again or a hardcore catholic so i dont know why you keep infering that i am acting like that

i mean, hell, you said it yourself....you believe in being true to yourself...im just trying to explain how the bible works AS A BOOK, as a piece of literature written over many years by many different people....if youve read any of my posts ive only talked about the bible from a completely historical and factual context....i havent been running around claiming its all true or that jesus is the one or anything like that.....i just happen to study the bible and be really interested in it.....alot of it is fact but then you have the rest of it which is based on faith which comes from christians....im not talking about anything in that book that has to do with the faith part....i mean just because i read and enjoy something doesnt mean i have to believe it, does it now???? if you admitted to reading science-fiction books in your spare time, i wouldnt automatically call you out and assume that what you read is what you believe so dont do that to me and instead try to read my posts for that they are

Exactly my point, idk how you guys are, but for the most part I know people that are religous fanatics believe so much in the bible that throwing it on the floor or ripping off pages is a sin. It's a book for god sakes, and people can interpret it however they want, either literally (which is clrealy retarded, becuase there is no way you can take two of every animal on the boat etc..) or as a moral guide(although I dont get why b/c it clearly advocates a lot of bad things). Like it or not a lot of people tkae that book so damn seriously, and they do believe it is the law of the land, above the constitution even, I mean people cite the bible all the time for gods sake
