More space bigger yield?

Hi looking for opinions, if plants have more space do they give better yields the reason I'm asking is that we had two plants in hydrponics tray total yield 7 ounce yet seven plants in same tray total 14 ounce,thanx

More LIGHT= bigger yield HOWEVER overcrowding can hurt your yield.

This is what I think was going on with your though:

If in the same space increasing your plant count is increasing your yield, you were not using your light properly to begin with and should have vegged longer to get a canopy that optimizes light use.

So it seems you are on your way.
