View Full Version : Gosh darn thread titles

I recently got a PM from a mod saying:
This putting fuck in your thread headers is getting old. On the main page this is the first thing that visitors see so it's frowned upon. Please just keep it real in the opener.
...after having posted my second thread ever containing the word "fuck" in the title. http://boards.cannabis.com/search.php?searchid=1138370
My question is, why exactly should the rules for what's acceptable in thread titles be any different from what's acceptable in the threads themselves? First of all, on the front page of the entire site, you see the link to the Sexuality forum, and you'll see the name of the most recent thread in it, which is usually more potentially offensive than my thread title of "Moral dilemmas that will fuck with your brain", even if it doesn't contain any swear words.
Secondly, people swear all the time all over this site, and I don't see a problem with that as long as it doesn't take the form of a personal insult. I didn't mean to insult or offend anybody, and I don't see how anybody could possibly be insulted or offended by the phrase "fuck with" meaning "perplex". Most people here seem to be cool with using swear words casually like that, and I have never ever heard anybody complain about it. When I come on here, I expect to be able to relax and talk like I talk to my friends, but clearly I'm wrong.
So what exactly are we not supposed to say in thread titles, and why should we refrain from putting things in thread titles that we are allowed to put in individual posts? A good deal of the threads you click on will have lots of swear words in them somewhere, no matter what, unless we start censoring everybody's posts.
I mean, if we're going to stop putting up thread titles that could potentially offend anybody who visits the site, we might as well shut down the Sexuality, Politics, Conspiracy, and Spirituality forums altogether. If there is a small number of people who stumble upon this site and get turned off by my use of the phrase "fuck with your brain", they're likely to get much more turned off by the thread titles which describe various sexual acts and attack their political ideologies.
By the way, there are lots of threads in the Sexuality forum which use the word "fuck" in the literal sense, which have not been altered, and whose titles appear on the main page for the site every time somebody posts in them. Is this just a Lounge phenomenon? Are there certain things we are not allowed to say in thread titles in the Lounge that are okay in Sexuality? Why? What is and isn't allowed, where, when, and in what contexts? I'm really confused.

LMAO! I've been changing thread titles for a while....in fact since Surrey was nice enough to address this topic. Your choice dude........I've been just deleting your precious "fuck" like a few other members but if you have that hard of a time finding a decent word for a replacement I can help with that also. Gosh, golly, gee whiz.......take your choice.
Is this really all that big of a matter to raise a stink about........

This issue has been discussed by the mods. It was decided that having this type of header on the homepage where people initially visit isn't really a welcome mat.
Your choice.....we can change em' up for ya if your at a loss for words. LOL
By the way, a P.M. is usually viewed as a PERSONAL message......why not send an e-mail and keep it that way?

Well since the mods more/less agree on the subject I think that's a done deal. Here's an example of my handy work.....I'd rather just post a decent title if I was in a members shoes.

Ok here are some thoughts about it,...this isnt me talkin aight? It should be cool using the word 'fuck' on thread titles specially if it doesnt sounded like 'ill fuck your mother on the ass while u are fucking ur sister' I mean cmon man,.. he said it 'that will fuck your brain' it sounded like a metaphor to me,... and for those people who visits our site, i dont think that they are goin to be offended or disgusted by that coz man stoners and potheads visits this site i mean they are cool, we are cool,we are here to talk about anything we want,... and its written on the Cannabis Lounge that u can talk nothing in particular,... and also i dont think highly educated peoples like those businessmans and very sensitive peoples will google Cannabis.com if they wanna talk about their stuffs,.. like for example lets say saying the word 'fuck' in thread titles is like smoking weed and all of a sudden a cop saw you and told you that ur under arrest for possesion of illegal drugs and being positive by it and you are in amsterdam?I mean im just gonne reply with ' is this a joke?' i dont know if u get the meaning of that but thats all im tryin to say is its cool as long as u know ur not offending anyone,...freedom of speech without insulting anyone,.. But i guess evry forum has its rule to be followed,.....

I must be stoned.......thats a granted, lol, but are you? I'm having a hard time finding the comparison. I actually enjoy thread title creations that I've done.....I guess it's the users choice on my level of enjoyment. LOL

I think keeping it a little clean on titles is a great thing and shouldnt be too hard..inside the thread all bets are off say what comes out but thread titles should take a second of thought.. althought i think his title said what was needed in ther best way possible...fuck with your brain or... mess with your brain...but almost all others are a little uncalled for.
Fuck i need a hit...golly gee i wish to inhale... much better i think. fuck it though this issues already cleared keep makin them titles beautiful!!

fuck that.. i'll keep cussing.. that's me (as my avatar plainly states) but i didn't know this no swearing in the title thing was goign on.... so i promise to take that into account in the future (i know i've used the word fuck in many of my thread titles... guess i never really noticed 'em being changed?)
my personal stance on it is that it's stupid.. of course... i mean if the word fuck in a title is enough to offend someone, what are the chances that sparing that word in the title would keep them from being offended on a MJ site?
but, i do abide by rules, i and i like this place, and i very well know what sundance is up to... so if it helps to keep it clean, i will.

I agree with you, Oneironaut.. But it's their rules, so I'm willing to put up with a bunch of stuff that might bother me a bit because there's so little here that does bother me.. See what I mean? :p

Yeah, I'll follow it if that's what the mods want, but I still think it's a rather silly and arbitrary rule. Not to mention inconsistently applied.

I say just have a little taste, and curse to your heart's desire inside the thread. ~

Thanks for that handy list, Oneironaut! You've been very helpful in raising the level of discourse on the thread titles and keeping this place from looking so much like it's the domain of a bunch of profane stoner-kids. You may think this is silly or that it violates your right to free speech (as if that were a guaranteed right on a privately owned cannabis forum). Lots of members agree with you. But it's precisely this sort of subtle shift in language and image that makes a fundamental difference in how cannabis users and advocates are regarded by people looking in from the outside. Especially intelligent, motivated activist types. I include you in this group. It's the smart, civil ones among us and among the outsiders looking in who're going to help break through the traditional stoner stereotypes, adjust public attitudes, and eventually effect a change in the laws we all know are so absurd.

Well...Although you younger kids might appreciate the visual stimulation of "fuck" on the frontpage. Some of us older members don't want to see it. I don't think that people visiting the site need to be subjected to yuor vulgarity. Pot site or no.
Once again; I challenge you to show me sites worth visiting that allow this type of behavior. I know of none.
In closing: this is more than a done deal. It is not going to be tolerated.
How childish.

It's rather impressive to me how many folks fire right up when they smell a possible hit to their rights without once ever thinking about others. Gee, who could POSSIBLY be offended by the way I talk....fucking mom in the ass etc......and who cares what anyone else thinks anyway?
BG you had me going for awhile.....but lost me in the talk about having the right "look" for the site when that skull peers down on everything.....from everywhere. i'm not pointing at you for it since I know it was Sundance's choice but since you brought it up.....
So many people here (ie Oneironaut) who have so much great stuff to offer waste so much energy on this type of crap. We're all here together....any chance we could act like it?

there is a huge difference between cursing while expressing a thought, and cursing because you are trying to show your ass...it seems some people here feel a need to use fuck, cunt, and a million other words that there really isnt a need for..and stop comparing this to freedom of speech..noone is saying that you cant express what you want, we are saying that when it gets obnoxious and in your face like that, find another way....case closed....
as for the other posts we dont catch, there are umpteen posts and a handfull of us, we do the best we can....get over it...really...
