Warning: We have been around second life since the beginning of 2007 and have found several forms of virtual entertainment wich are not suitable for kids.
Even in the socalled PG areas (Parent Guidance advised) there are chances of running into the wrong people or situations not suitable for minors.
Give your kids The Simms series of games and they will be relatively safe. Second Life is meant for 18+ adults in our opinion.
