We're gonna need a little more evidence than just the fact that he grew hemp. Tonnes of farmers have grown hemp, and obviously it doesn't get you high. One does not necessitate the other.

Our founding fathers grew fields of hemp for ropes used on big ships. Ben George and Tom used to go over to Ben's house in Philly and they would roll big blunts & get stewie louey and plan how they were gonna take over the world.

Thomas Jefferson's Garden Journal. In it were 3 references to hemp. Two were "plant more" and the third was expressing regret that he wouldn't be home for the hemp harvest. Make of it what you will! - Granny:hippy:

Modern industrial hemp doesn't get you high, because it's been specifically bred not to have significant amounts of THC in it. The kind that was grown by Washington and Jefferson back in the 18th century was surely just regular cannabis with regular THC levels in it.

However, it's still rather unlikely that they ever smoked it. It just wasn't known in western European and American cultures of the time as a plant that would get you intoxicated if you smoked it. There's no mention of cannabis smoking in the literature of the time, and no historical evidence of cannabis smoking devices or anything like that. And of course, farmers didn't just smoke their crops to see what would happen. So chances are they never even knew they were growing a drug.

It wasn't until the early decades of the 20th century that cannabis smoking really became known in the US, being brought here by Mexican immigrant workers.

So did Bush. CNN.com - Author: I should give tapes to Bush - Feb 21, 2005 (http://www.cnn.com/2005/ALLPOLITICS/02/21/bush.tapes/)

Bush says he "wouldn't answer the marijuana question ... 'cause I don't want some little kid doing what I tried."

"But you gotta understand, I want to be president, I want to lead. I want to set -- Do you want your little kid to say, 'Hey daddy, President Bush tried marijuana, I think I will?' " he said.

what about the indians? they've been smoking the shit forever. they were here (in america) before us. so how would we not know anything about it until the 20th century. that doesn't sound right.

I believe he might have if you recall back in school they always told you how he had horrible teeth, but have you everwondered about the pain involved. Plus the first laws ever invoving MJ were it was required to be grown if you were a liciensed farmer.

Yeah, so? Farmers do that with lots of crops, for various reasons. If he was smoking it, wouldn't he have written something about that in his journal somewhere? And wouldn't there be some kind of historical evidence that somebody somewhere in America was smoking cannabis at the time? We have plenty of evidence that people were drinking alcohol and smoking opium and tobacco. They wrote about these drugs, painted pictures about them, and left artifacts for historians to find. But there's just no evidence that colonial Americans had any idea cannabis was a drug.

Cannabis is an Old World plant, native to central Asia. It wasn't until the Europeans arrived that it was grown in the Americas.

i read somewhere that he was talking about separating the males and females, aka he needed the females so he could smoke the buds

That's not the only reason one might want to separate male and female hemp plants, as the two genders have distinct differences (i.e. in their fibers) that could be of importance to a hemp farmer. Or perhaps he wanted to separate them before the males fertilized the females so he could pick the best males and the best females and breed them together. If he was recording his hemp growing with such detail, don't you think somewhere on one of the pages he would have written something about intending to smoke it? I don't see why he would leave that out. Hemp farmers of the time didn't write anything about growing the best plants to smoke, unlike opium and tobacco farmers who couldn't shut up about it.

he never wrote about it because whenever he smoked it he would eat a shit load then fall asleep, and forget to write in his journal... duh :p

back in the day, they wrote journals instead of going on myspace. they didn't want to let their future employers know they smoked. thats why you don't read about it. duh!
