I was thinking about making a new piece using clay as the bowl (I adhor metal bowls). Does anybody know anything about working with clay? Should I bake it (like in a kiln) or will I be ok smoking out of an 'unfinished' clay bowl?

If anybody actually knows something about clay, can I bake it in a common kitchen oven? If so, at what temp for how long?

uhmmm... I remember I looked this up earlier. if u search clay heating on google u will find it. I think its 375 Farenheit though. and yes a normal oven should work. Haven't tried it but I have read so.

Well, I did a little research and what I've found is that the brisque firing (the first firing) is very important as it burns off certain chemicals and impurities, and it is done at a few thousand degrees... So no, a kitchen oven cannot be used as a kiln.

unfired clay is carinagenic (can cause lung cancer when the dust is in haild) all you really need is the bisque fire cuz that makes is permenatly hard the 2nd firing is only needed if you glaze it

Am I correct about needing temps exceeding those a typical kitchen over is capable of?

i'm not sure of the temps or anything but yes you need tempatures far greater than an oven can produce.....maybe you could try to (assuming you don't have a kiln..i mean it's not something that every kitchen has lol) look on google to see if you could substitute with a propane torch....i know the flames on those are atleast 1000 degrees'

Actually, propane burns around 3000 degrees F at sea level in the atmosphere... I got a couple torches, propane, MAPP, and a slick little oxy/mapp rig that will cut through a big ass master lock like a hot knife through butter (burns at over 4500*)... Probably could construct an oven, but I picked up a glass spoon earlier today...

i love glass i got a nice glass bowl at a gas station for 20$ and its all swirly and cool

yeah you would need a kiln type thing the kitchen oven wouldnt work cuz its not hot enough and the torch wouldnt work because the clay needs to bake for like 7 plus hours

or any smoke shop... Local (maybe not just local) Tobacco store chain, Smokers Outlet, carries a *decent* selection of simple glass and metal pipes...
