At the headshop in the mall, it just seems to be a gathering of the assholes. Whenever I go in there, I'm always getting dirty looks or talked to in a bad tone. Some examples
Me: Hey, what are those chillums made from?
Clerk: [snotty tone]Those AREN'T chillums. They are cigarette holders!
Me: How much is your cheapest bong with a slider piece?
Clerk: [Bitchy tone] First of all, its called a WATERPIPE. Second of all, you need I.D for me to tell you anything
Have any bad experiences like this?

Well, you should have known that you cant say bong in a headshop. Thats a pretty quick way to be shut down. Most places will kick you out if you say it more than once after being warned.
Im not saying the attitude was cool, but they probably get tired of having to tell people things like that.

It never said anywhere that the term bong is outlawed. Plus it said bong on a label for them elsewhere.

If you are 14 they probably think the cops sent you in ;)
Why should they tell you anything about stuff you clearly can't buy and if they did sell you something they would go down for it?.
Naaah, they would be better off being jerks and getting you to leave...

Sounds like you should reward em by walking in with a Marijuana shirt on and a Cannabis leaf hat and ask em where they grow their weed.
Or maybe u were doing that and thats why they acted the way they did.

I don't even look 14. I've been said to pass from 16-21 before. 21 is a little over the top, but thats what I've been told so whatever. And I just walked in normally as everyone else would do.

The Gas Pipe (on N Collins in Arlington TX) Is my fave place to shop. The people are actually friendly, polite & helpful and don't act like they can't wait for you to leave. They are always giving away free shit (little stuff, matches, posters, bottle openers etc) good prices, nice selection.
I always go there as it is in total contrast to the Pipe Dreams On Cooper in Arlington TX. That place is right by UTA and maybe they are used to acting too cool for the room and showin their asses when all the college kids are there, but omg, the last time I was in there I had visions of dramatically sweeping my arm along the shelf breaking all the bongs and flipping those jerks off as I uhhh... ran away.
But yeah, dude, never ever call them bongs. Imagine you gotta work there you'd probably get real tired of reminding people to say waterpipe a zilliontyfive times a day.

yeah, well Im 35 and still get carded for booze, cause of that dumb thing where if you don't look at least 75 they gotta card you.
How old do you have to be to go to/buy stuff at the head shops now?
I remember being about 16/17 and going to one. They let us buy stuff.

yeah you gotta learn the lingo when youre in those places. they dont take lightly to that kind of thing.
I have a limited vocabulary in headshops which consists of phrases like "that one" or "how much?" Because I avoid buying unfamiliar equipment (like unique bongs that seem complicated), it's always friendly and quick for me when I visit my local headshop. One time I had the clerk sell me some weed, of course it wasn't at his shop, we met him later. Good stuff, too, now that I recall. That along with the killer deal on pipes, bongs, hoses and hookahs, made for one unforgettable headshop endeavor.

The age is eighteen at every place I've been. Since everything in the stores are tools for smoking tobacco, they figured you must be able to legally smoke tobacco to purchase anything.

theres a bunch off headshops in Nyc, ranging from ones where 12 year olds can buy a bong to stores that you have to show ID before you step inside. You just gotta find one with a chill clerk

alot of headshops will kick you out and give you a bitchy attitude for that type for shit... they can get shut down like that....
my headshop however, doesn't give a shit... we've had conversations about weed o.0

I had one the other day.
Pshh, I walk in there with my mother so that she can get some screens and a small scale. I'm holding her money, because I had a purse that day and she didn't. The guy behind the counter bitched at us, telling her she needs to carry her own money next time, and that I can't even LOOK at anything without showing him the proper ID first. Sorry, I'll just close my eyes then, eh?
It was like- Dude. Chill, alright?
It just surprised me because we constantly go to that headshop for their laidback attitude. My dad took my younger brother and me in there once and they didn't give us shit, not even as we're browsing the shirts (which are all consisted of things like "stoner chicks rule" and jokes about weed), blunt wraps, and drug testing things. I mean...this is the store that's got marijuana leaf garlands hanging from all the doors.
It just surprised me.
And it made sure the they weren't getting OUR business anytime soon.
It's all about finding the right store, with the right clerks, because the next one we went to was family owned, and they even had their 4 or 5 year old daughter with them behind the counter. They didn't ask for my ID just because I was pointing things out to my mother, and were always pleasant. They even gave us 15% percent off, and threw in a couple lighters.
It sucks, I know, to have some bitchy clerk acting as if you're a terrible person just for using 'bong' (though...nowhere have I ever heard that bong ONLY applies to marijuana, so I always laugh when they say 'waterpipe'). Just find a more laidback place, or get to know which clerks to avoid at the one you currently go to.

I just hate it when an underage buyer gets my favorite head shop closed. No offense dude, but you had no business being in there in the first place, but you really blew it by using stoner terms (bong and the like).

yes, actually they can be closed for that... the only thing that keeps them legal to begin with is becuase they're assumed to be for smoking tobacco or legal herbs... when you start attaching names of devices used pretty much soley for illegal drugs, it causes alot of problems. i've never personally seen it happen, but it can.
go ask soem headshop owner you're cool with if you don't believe me...
and also, you better believe there are people wherever that headshop is, that are just waiting for one fuck up, so they can enforce the law and close it down. they see it as winning a battle in the 'war on drugs'

There's a head shop near where I lived that's managed by a full-fledged soccer mom. She has her kids names on the back of her van and everything.

Yeah, Slipknot is correct. Using the term "bong" can get the owner in trouble. Why? Because if you live in a jurisdiction where sale or possession of drug paraphernalia is a crime then referring to the water pipe as a bong (a term associated with drung para.) and then selling and/or buying it has got ya in the hot seat. Some jurisdiction's statutes or ordinances actually use that exact word, "bong" as a descriptor of drug para. So now you understand why the clerk doesn't want to acknowledge the existence of a "bong" in their shop.

My head shop will not sell you anything if you used any phrases like: bong, hitter, dugout(its a "tobacco taster!"), or bowl.
Kinda stupid. You could smoke tobacco out of it and still call it a bong...
slipknotpsycho
04-03-2007, 05:00 AM
oh i'm not arguing with the stupidity of the whole thing... everyone, EVERYONE knows what it's being used for, seems kinda pointless to me to call it one thing when everyone else knows it's something else....
that'd be like a jew calling a pig a cow so he can still eat it :p

There will always be exceptions to rules.
This rule is to use the correct terminology.
We all make mistakes, don't give people reasons to do things.

ooo well i guess in some areas then it can be closed down but where I live you can use the words freely in any shop and use the words with the owners and employees i guess its just different places different rules

I get that bitchy attitude at auto parts stores and home depot all the fucking time.
Like, seriously, I don't need to get talked down to by some fucking shelf-stocker because I don't know the technical term for somthing that doesn't NEED a technical name...
yes this happened again YESTERDAY when I'm like, where do you keep cheap galvanized 14-gauge wire?
WTF!!!! I wanted to sock the guy right in the puss.
Him: 'ooooohhhhhh... you mean mechanics repair wire.....' (pronounced veery slowly so me with my missing Y chromosome would STILL be able to understand him)...
Me: 'I'm not a mechanic and I was PLANNING to hang ductwork with it but now I just want to use it as a garrote on your scrawny little neck'
Well, I didn't say that but I wanted to... grrr...

Hey guys n' gals,
I'm from Canada, Ottawa originally now Thunder Bay, and ive been to smoke shops all over the country but never been to one in the US. Is the rule about not mentioning bongs, or weed in smoke shops only in the US? Cause whenever im browsing the local smoke shop i always chat with the person behind the counter about the bongs or whatever. Just wonderin?
Take it easy,

not sure if it's ONLY in the states, but i'd imagine the only places that enforce such a superficial and idiotic law, would be places that have heavy penalties for anything related to weed....
