i was thinking about a conversation i was having with my friend the other day and i dont remember what it was but i was telling her something that really meant something to me but she didn't believe me because i was kind of nervous and avoided looking in her in the eye.
lets say you're telling someone something REALLY serious.. like it affect the both of you and you don't make eye contact, do you think the person will take you seriously?
on a scale of 1 to 10. how important is eye contact to you?

10 all the way. You can tell how someone "is" by looking them in the eyes.

i never look anyone in the eyes really... kinda fucks me in the end tho... try telling a cop you're not lying when you won't look in their face for more than 2 seconds and actually have them believe you... applies with parents, friends, family ect... so i'd say pretty important...

Eye contact is important but you can't tell if someone is lying or not by lookin in there eyes anyway.
Just because you don't keep eye contact with a cop it don't mean your lying but he would probly think you are anyway. I mean i would probly keep eye contact with a cop even if i was lying and everyone knows to look someone in there eye if you don't want them to think your lying but the cop must know that so either way unless the story is real good he would think you were lying right, eye contact or not? But eye contact deffently looks alot better then none in any situation.

The Truth is in the eyes 'cuz the eyes don't lie.
and for your information smokeblunts3, yes, there IS a way to detect a lie within the eyes.

Incredibly important.
It is the baring of the soul, the extremest form of body language (besides sex), and sometimes I can even read people's minds when I stare into their eyes.
Pisses me off when I ask someone a question and they stare away as they answer. It's dismissive.

10 I think its rude to stare away when talking to someone personally. But they say that 80 percent of what you say is dictated through eye contact and physical gestures

Shit i never even said you can't detect if someone is lying by looking at there eyes so what are you talking about? I know you can tell, my sister takes a psychology(sp?) and she tried to do an experiment on me watching my eyes and telling me to lie about something. She said it had to do something with the pupils changing size just slightly then going back to how they were.
Once when i was questioned by some detectives they said they knew i was lying because i was looking away. Even tho i don't think i was (was in there car light right infront of my eyes so i had to blink and look around alot to keep my eyes from burning.) Told my sister about how they said this she said that that way is not a valid way to tell if someone is lying or not. That is what i was trying to say in that last post. Or atleast i think so:thumbsup:

It's almost impossible for me to look someone in the eyes while I talk because of my anxiety. Unless I am somehow intoxicated. But it's probably a 10.

The mind is insubstantial. By that I mean you cannot grab hold of it or pinpoint it. So comparing blindness (a physical disorder) to being "mindless" (whatever that even means) is pretty convoluted there.
Anyways, 10. Eye contact. Especially with the opposite sex. If I'm just chillin with my homies smokin on a blizzunt we could ramble to each other all wasted "eh". But if Im talking to a female Im definitely contacting their eyes. Feels great.
To me it depends on the situation. But I don't always like to make eye-contact. There are times when it's necessary, and times when it's not. By the way, it's not always possible to detect a lie by analyzing someone's eyes. If a person is a good liar, they will know how they look when they are telling the truth, and manipulate that. But in general, yeah. The eyes aren't the only indicators of a liar. Tone of voice, breathing rates, movements, etc. But most of these are very dependent on the person's personality... as is how one's eyes look during the act of a lie.

Very important. If you can't look me in the eye, then your daddy didn't teach you much.

None of you get nervous when looking into someones eyes? I'm scared about what I'm going to see when I look into their eyes.
Eyes can say everything especially the truth about what someone is thinking about you. You can read deepily into someone's mind just by the look in their eyes. Thats why I get real nervous but perhaps it should be dealth with see has how the majority had said its real important to make eye contact.

Eye contact is super important! Here's something fun you can try if your uncomfortable about making eye contact... Might even get you laid! When your walking thru a mall or other public area with lots of people, look females who are by themselves right in the eye, as they are walking toward you. Lock your focus on one eye, don't look ANYWHERE else, and don't break eye contact till you would have to turn your head to maintain it. Make sure your smiling, or you might creep her out. 9 times out of 10, you will get a smile back. As she's passing, quietly say "hi there"... They will ALWAYS say "hi" back! Doesn't matter what the girl looks like, or even If you think she 10 miles away from being in your league, as those are the ones that REALLY suprise you!
It's a fun game I like to play. A lot of times, girls will literally trip over there own feet trying to turn and look at you. People aren't used to being looked in eyes. Do it often enough, and in other venues (work, school, restaurants, ect...), soon your friends will start telling you that you've changed, and you seem more happy and confident now... At least, thats what happened with me!

Me too.
Weed and alcohol are magical when it comes to giving me enough confidence to look people in the eye, and talk to them without tripping over what I'm saying every 5 seconds.
Yeah, eye contact's important, and I use it...but only with people I'm comfortable with. So if people think that makes me weak or without manners, they can kiss my ass, because I've had people tell that to me before. But if you can't tell that I'm being SHY and not RUDE, that's your problem, not mine.

I can't make eye contact for the life of me. I don't even directly look at most people when I talk to them. I face them and have my head toward them but my eyes look in other directions. Also this is when stuff isn't even serious.
Edit: Even with school speaches I look over the aduaence so I get the points if my teacher thinks I look at people.

I am a shy person by nature but,,, I give direct eyeball to eyeball contact when I want to drive a point home... If someone looks away or blinks a lot I assume there is an untruth somewhere...

maybe it isn't dismissive- perhaps they don't want you to read their mind. Maybe they are shy about sharing brain-space:stoned:

I used to be rather COY.
Pssh it's all better now, and the nicer/sincere the person is, the easier it is to look them in the eye for longer than 10 seconds. After that, it can sometimes get weird, lol...
Some people I just can't look away from though, ya know. :hippy:

I know what you mean-with some people it is as if you are falling into their soul through their eyes- thump goes my heart!

Eye contact is very important. When some one can't maintain eye contact with me when we're talking I obviously know there is something that's making them uncomfortable. If not then why would you not be making eye contact when you're talking to me? Trust me when you look nervous and don't put confidence in what you say or do people will be able to recognize straight off the type of person you are.
