The "Z" Machine * Ozone Generator *

Hello peoples.

After using a homemade carbon scrubber, and not being satisfied, I made a second scrubber composed of carbon, cat litter, bounce sheets, and a whole arsenal of other smelly crap. It still didn't seem to get rid of the lovely plant smell. ( sucks we have to hide it eh? )

Well, I refuse to spend $600 + for an ozone generator, so I built one.

Using a 5000 volt neon sign transformer, a cat litter box, aluminum foil, and other little bits of stuff, I created the "Z" Machine.

A glass plate * "yoinked" from an unused picture * separates 2 layers of aluminum foil taped to the glass plate.

5000 volts is fed to each piece of foil from the Allanson neon sign transformer.

When turned on, you hear a "zzzzzz" noise, hence the name the "Z" machine. It gives off quite a large ammount of ozone for a single plate, I will be upgrading to 2 plates running off the single transformer. I also have a second transformer in case I need to build a second ozone generator.

Pics below show my ozone plate inside the Cat litter box, along with an MS paint picture I made of the Ozone plate. And a final pic showing the size of the "Z" machine (14 inches long) compared to the carbon scrubber ( 2.5 FEET long ).

hopefully your aware of the bad effects of lots of ozone to both your plants and yourself and have seen the glass insulator break during use on homeade units before so wouldnt necassarly trust a picture glass.

I am aware of the dangers of ozone and many other factors. :)

The ozone that is produced does not come in contact with anything, other then the outflow of air.

Air goes into the "Z" Machine, and then passes directly to the fan, then out the window.

I'd get another layer of glass on top and bottom of the foil sheets; maybe thicker foil too, but that's a very sound idea. :)

well for starters you must use a plastic that will not be eaten by the Ozone. And for some reason comercial ozone gen use a mesh , of stainless steel.
If the ozone is not direct venting to the outside air it will distroy , plastics, wiring,rubber that comes in contact with the venting.
With out a timer with the gen you will way over shoot normal ozone levels.
The reason you do not see plans for ozone gen is the safety factor.
For some reason large growers use the comercial types for safety and the cops. Any nark can smell the effects of ozone , in fact its one of the things they look for.
I have built a few ozone gen and you must use a plastic that can withstand the direct contact of high ozone. That white bucket is not a ozone safe box/bucket.
Please think safety or you can kill someone. Direct hand to hand conducts electricy through the heart , and screws up the heart even if you young.

Whether it lasts a while or not, it costs $50, and is easily replaceable. Im not spending $600 - 800+ for something I can build myself. As I said earlier, the ozone is vented DIRECTLY outside, thus NOT harming ANYONE, or ANYTHING.

Dang that thing does looks dangerous plastics that you can buy and make into whatever container you want would be better(you could then make a safe container). Outside ventalation is just that you could be poluting your environment which you live in. Urbangrower says those sulfer buners along with a carbon filter like you built would work and those are only like $200 on the net.

About a 2 years ago all the board took off home made , gen because of the safety issues.
99 % of homemaid units are death traps.
The earth is over populatede a few less will make it last a few billion more years +- 1 millioin years.
Think safey , your life depends on it.
