I'm moving in with my boyfriend this summer and we want to get a small dog, but we dont know what breed we want. We're thinking max. 15 lbs. I'd like something that doesnt shed but I could deal with a little bit of hair as long as it wasnt out of control. We're going to be living in the city so theres a good chance people may want to pet him on walks and stuff so it needs to be fairly friendly. I'm not a fan of dogs that snore because I already know I'll let it sleep in bed with us. Any ideas on what we should get?

an Olde Boston Bulldogge! Bigger than what you are looking for, and hard to find (only 3 breeders on the continent that I am aware of), but an AMAZING animal- real big dog personality in a smaller size and very smart.

If not that, then a Boston terrier, French bulldog, or an English bulldog, even though bullies often snore, they are just way too awesome. Clean, calm, trustworthy when left alone, good with kids, and easy to train. I have a bigger bully breed and will never have another type of dog! They're perfect.

Here's pics of the Olde Boston... Olde Boston Bulldogge (Old Boston Bulldog) by Bulldog Information (http://www.bulldoginformation.com/Old-boston-bulldog.html)

I personally have a thing for cocker spaniels.

Loyal breed, and very people friendly.

my boyfriend wants to get a pug but some people a few houses away from my parents have like 9 of them (I think they might be breeders) and they are so loud. I dont know if its because they just put them in the back yard half the day or what, but I dont want a dog that acts like them. They get out a lot too and just cause trouble. Thats the only pug experience I have though so if you think pugs are different than what I described please tell me. I really wouldnt be surprised if the ones near me were just acting that way because they're bored/ignored all day.

Small Molossians (Small Molosser Breeds) (http://www.bulldoginformation.com/small-dog-breeds-molossers.html)
These breeds are all closely related.... pug, frenchie, olde boston bull, and boston terrier... I love this site...

I would never own a toy poodle.. when they were bred down for size, temerament went out the damned window... fiesty, yappy, nippy, blech.
Now a STANDARD poodle, that's a different story, and I would DEFINITELY consider one of those.
Very smart and interesting dog.

I had a min. poodle growing up. He wasnt as loving as I think I want my new dog to be. One of the dogs I have right now is a poodle mix. He's a nice mix of sweet and smart. My parents wont let me take him though because they think my moms dog will be lonely.

another pug vote!

I have one, he's about 6 months old and he's probably one of the best dog's I have met.

loves people, loves to play fight, knows when to be friendly and doesnt make too much racket (bark).

he only barks at weird sounds he is not used to, maybe 1 or 2 times a week.

I will get some pics up when I get my digi camera hooked up.

FRENCH BULLDOGS! Best small/medium dog breed ever. Very loving and loyal. They barly need any exercise, don't need much of any space for walks and such. They don't shed all that much. They are great if you want to play with them without having to take a long walk or anything. They are also great lapdogs, great watch-tv with you dogs, and great take-naps-with you dogs.

I agree with Stinky on this one, but if you don't get a bullybreed choose a terrier. They would need alot of exersize, but a good patterdale terrier or even a working class bull terrier would be alot of fun.

If you get a puppy get ready to deal with all the puppy issues. I LOVE pugs as well....they do snore....as do any of the pushed in face breeds.

Something to think about with pushed in face dogs....they don't handle heat well and can die quicker and from less heat than other dogs....you must take care with those dogs and hot temps. But I love pugs and bostons. You can keep your bulldogs...they're fun but genetic nightmares.

I do love schnauzers but they are SHRILLING in their bark and can have aggressive streaks.

A standard poodle is not an apartment dog.

I love terriors also but they can also have a fighting streak as well.

Anything you pick is going to have pluses and minuses. For an apartment I'd stick with a pug or boston as stinky said.

puppy love!!

We have a beagle [Scooby 5yrs] they are big teddy bears, and extremly gentle, but they love to hunt wabbitts

keep a leash handy, or fence they dig alot too good overall with people

My daughters have a mini dacshund and yellow lab [Hank & Henry]

LABS are the real care givers and best with people,

I trully believe labs would/will save a life!

Terriors are just what they say they are terrible litlle critters!

ours [baby 11 yrs] sits around and stares at us!!

all day long !

love those critters!

Yikes. Patterdale / Fells terriers are FEISTY little scrappers!!! They are true working varmint dogs. I've been impressed, and also a bit frightened, by the Patterdales I've met.
Bull terriers I really like but they too are SO intelligent and stubborn that you have to give them a LOT of time.
I like Frenchies but as with any flat-faced breed you MUST find a breeder who is conscientious about breathing problems and hip/elbow problems. That is not a dog you want to just look in the classifeds for pups.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier, and I would recommend anyone to get one. He's over 3 now (my avatar picture is a recent pic of him), so he's grown out of the puppy stage, and chilled out a good bit. He is the most loyal dog I have ever been around. They can be entergetic, but not to the point of where it gets annoying. He is very agile, and loves to play with toys. I NEVER had a problem with him chewing on things as a puppy. As long as he has a bone and a toy, he's completely satisfied. I love that he is so small because I can scoop him up and carry him around with me. They are a very smart breed, never had any problems with training him, and he was housebroken after a few weeks. Easily leash trained. He only barks when someone is at the door, and he doesn't snore. I would guess that he's about 8 lbs. (maybe not even that), but he was the runt. (I always get the runt). Not very expensive either. We bought him from a breeder and only paid $350.

Good luck with your decision:)

Edit: Also very low maintenence...wash, clip nails, brush teeth. Short hair, so no shedding.

noone said a toy yorkie, theu are the cutest little dogs if you keep them puppy cut. I myself have a bearded dragon (my avatar) and I love her, she is quiet and loving and best of all potty trained.

Jack Russell: dogs on springs
Beagles: bark too much and roam, sweet dogs
Bull terriors.....I love em....don't own one
Yorkies bite and are nervous and delicate DONT get a delicate dog.
Labs.....another breed I love.....and will tell you not to get
Toy poodle Smarter than shit....somewhat aloof, can bite
cockers no. just no. (nervous, genetic probs, hair is a HUGE hassle)

To add to this very good list- cockers are HUNTING dogs . I don't consider them pets.
Herding breeds are also working animals and need to work or they will give you trouble, and that includes shelties, which people think are apartment sized just becaus ethye are small.
I would never own a lab. They are nice to visit but I wouldn't want to live with one.
Most important, do your research on the origin of the breed, read up on breeders' websites becasue you will always find hints as to what the issues are that they try ot avoid with the breed.

BOXERS RULE!!!
But don't get one unless you can devote a LOT of time to it. Boxers require constant attention, but if you treat them right, they are the smartest, most loving and 'human' dogs out there.

Boxers sulk like champs. OMG it's pathetic. You can't yell at them. They will go sit ini a corner and look at you over their shoulder with this expression like, Well fine be like that, Ima go sulk now. I love them!!! But prefer a boxer crossed with a bully to temper the excessive energy.

If I had a bigger back yard, I would have a couple of boxers. I just don't want to be unfair to a large dog by cooping it up in the house. We had a male and female boxer when I was younger, and they were great dogs. Very loving, and loyal.

Lol, they can do that too....and have the face for it.....the sad, SAD, look.

Stinky's point about the right pet for the right job is excellent.....the best advice I've heard so far.....well.....except mine of course..... :D

By cockers I think you are saying cocker sapniel. I knew one who live with my ex's grandmother. That dog was like human to her, most sweet and smart dog I have ever met. They are wounderful dogs to have as companions. I'd love one just I'm not into dogs you have to take to get groomed.
