Can I use six 30watt Full Spectrum Daylight 5900K CFL lights in about a 3X3 area for both veg and to flower? I just bought these off ebay and could anybody take a guess at how many lumens per light that is? the listing never said but I figured six of these should be good.

you can, but your plants and yeild would suffer.

for a hundred bucks, you can get a new 400w hid, if you look hard enough. i suggest you use those only in veg, bring out the big guns in flower.

Don't sell cfls short. If this is your first grow, use cfls. I did it and i had a great yeild. I am on my second grow now and trying out a 150 hps, so far so good. But don't let anyone tell you that cfls suck.

just go hps, the parts are like $50 from local electric supply houses, it's not just how much light you have, but how intense, I am using 3 150w hps's (in a single hood), sure that's 48k lumens , but the intensity is only 15k; that's enough intensity at close range to penetrate even the bushiest plants i've had. just one 150w hps will blow your mind (with 1-2 plants at flower).

You should've asked before you purchased them dude...:(

CFLs can work great for small 1-2 plant grows. But that's only providing that all the other elements and variables in the environment are damn near perfect. One of those elements, which is possibly THE most important of them, is light spectrum.

Some thoughts on light spectrum --> http://boards.cannabis.com/indoor-lighting/108095-kelvin-little-light-subject.html

And in my opinion, short answer to your question is yes, you can grow a plant with the 6 30watters.

Reality is it won't do well unless you have the PERFECT variable conditions. Chances of that are unlikely.

And your plants flowering cycle will suffer substancially without the proper light specs.

You can try it and see how well you can do and then brag to us or you could wait a little while and get 6 more on the cool end of the spectrum. (I'de recommend HPS but I think it's too late for that at this point.)

That's the only way I see it...

"and get 6 more on the cool end of the spectrum."

I meant the WARM end of the spectrum...:wtf:

My apologies.

Dont know whats wrong with the people that responded so far, but 1) you can even look around, plenty of people grow with CFLs. The size is a bit smaller, but thats usually a good thing since space is often an issue. Instead of growing one or two large plants, you may want to grow a few smaller plants. 2) that is the correct light spectrum.. but when flowering time comes you will have to buy new bulbs, no biggie they are 6$ for 2 at wallmart.

I'm all for CFL grows. In fact, I'm going to be growin with a HOT5 (High Output T5 fluorescent) soon. It factors in at around 20000 Lumens. In a rectangle "cabinet/closet" area thats roughly 1.5ft x 4ft x (adjustable hieght). The adjustable hieght plays a big roll in penetration.

CFLs can and will do well, as long as you can supplement correctly.
