View Full Version : My stupid house.

I've been hinting around about this for a bit now. Here's some pics of the crap we're dealing with.

At least we've got it under control enough that now we're actually living in the damn thing.

To bring random folks up to speed: we bought a 94 year old house. Yes, we realized it was going to need some TLC, but damn. The chick that owned it before us lied on the paperwork, as did the realtors. It has plumbing issues out the yingyang. We signed on it Feb 23, but couldn't actually move into it until this past week. The furnace didn't work, the water heater didn't work, and we had 28 leaks. So, here are pictures of the hole in my livingroom ceiling/bathroom floor. We have retained an attorney:thumbsup:

Some of those things you mentioned... you didn't notice before you moved in? :wtf:

Dude yea it was kinda your fault on this. My dad/his girlfriend want to buy a house up north thats 110 years old. Its actually in very GOOD condition but we got a house inspector. We found there were alot worse things that was told to us. There was a second ceiling in the kitchen that covered up the first one which had rotted away almost. And the electical problems were awful.

Though it cost a couple 100$'s for the insepection it could possibly save us 20K in the long run. From the deductions of the repairs if we do get the house.

Right on. Believe me, Papi and I had a couple of awful arguements about this. I wanted the inspection, he didn't. He was being unduly influenced by our realtor. Long story, but that's the gist of it. I noticed the issues, but "people" said I was just being a wet blanket. There was also a lot of flat out deception going on, on the part of the realtors i.e. backdated paperwork etc. It's just a mess, but we're getting a handle on it now. But the house issues are the reason why my grow got stalled, and why I am just so darn cranky and unlaid.:p

Yes thank you very much. Getting a lawyer at this point? Well good luck, but you don't buy unless... well too late for that. I talk shit but my first house I bought was built in 1906 so I really don't feel bad. I tore up every little area I could in the day time BEFORE I bought the house and I was never really surprised about anything. In the end, I remodeled a kitchen a bathroom, and fixed the garage and sold for $190,000 with a $82,500 buying price. (lived there for 6 yrs) I guess I would suggest saving your money on a lawyer and finding a good handyman!

You know who you should be really pissed at? Your realtor. What a piece of shit!

Sorry Hon, you beat me to it... I feel for you for being the voice of reason... but you gotta SHOUT SISTER!!! BE HEARD!!!

Plastic Jesus
03-19-2007, 04:33 PM
oh yeah... and i wouldn't be posting pics... with grow logs.. or rooms... delete the pics now please... shhh...

and furthermore talk about lawyers... they will do a home inspection.. you know this right? and they will look EVERYWHERE... this thread is just no good sweetie!

Wow, that must suck, but you really should have checked it out before signing anything. I know when I buy a home, I will be looking at it very well before buying it.

Not taking a walkthrough before signing is like buying any used car from a lot without seeing it first. :p

Good luck with the court battles though. Now you have to spend more money on a lawyer. I'm thinking this all could have been avoided if you had actually seen the home first (inside and out).

Not to offend you, but that wasn't good judgment on whose ever part it was not to look inside first. This case might a little harder win than you think.

Anyways, good luck!

Yeppers, it's the realtor who is on my shitlist.
Papi and I are both quite handy. We have no shortage of talent. It's time that is in short supply. We've got 4 kids between us, he works crazy hours, and I do my thing(s) for scratch, so time is at a premium. And this house is a freaking barn, so it takes all day to even clean it. My calves are gonna be so stoked...3 floors plus a basement. I'll be able to crack walnuts with my buttcheeks.

You nailed it in one honey. I tried, but my puddy control wasn't strong enough.;)

LOL! dig that. Price wasn't bad. 86K for 4 bedrooms, 2 bath, nice neighborhood, big backyard with space for a garden!, central air, fireplace, updated wiring, big ol' porch, standup freezer, microwave, fridge and range, oh yeah one of those groovy old beauty salon hair dryer chairs, and a couple of outbuildings. And beyoootiful woodwork. I'm happy with the house as a whole, and can see myself growing old here. I'm just irritated that it wasn't in move in condition and that we were lied to.

ericwt
03-19-2007, 05:17 PM
That is a great price!

Yea, I know it is frustrating. I had a home inspection and a few months later I had to dish out $2,600 for pluming problems.

Sometimes you just get blindsided. But for all the annoyance it is still worth it to have your own place.

Have any of you ever seen the show "If Walls Could Talk"? Its on HGTV and its about really old homes that people have redone and all the things they learn about the history of the homes and the people that used to live in them. I really like it but I am both a history and design nerd. If you watch it you might get some cool period design ideas if you want to go in that direction for decoration.

Wow, look how substantial a real house is! I have a brand new MFR home, and although its tight and warm (and has a warranty :)), build quality and components are, shall we say, lacking. Its kinda scary how flimsy the materials are. You actually have real wood in those walls! I think mine are cardboard :P. I figure I'll hang out here for awhile and hope I find the right location and build a stick home.

Does it have counterweighted windows? My old house had those and talk about a potential nightmare.

I am pleased to report that we have all new superdeeduper insulated windows that tilt in for easy cleaning LOL! But yeah, the old timey plaster and lathe construction has challenges of it's own. I'm giggling at the thought of you building a stick home. It reminds me of the Three Little Pigs.:p

I like that show, too. I grew up in a 110-year-old Victorian-era "Money Pit," Mrs. Green. It was constantly needing something, and when it did it was never cheap. Glad y'all are handy!

Here in Texas, by law, lenders won't even let someone get a mortgage without an inspection. I can't remember which state you're in, but I'm guessing it's not here. Good luck!

Now that is just freaking wrong! I would have been upset too. When you renovate a house, your spirit gets infused into it. I love old houses. One of the reasons why I am so pissed about this house is because it's gorgeous. It has great bones, and it's been neglected. I see so much waste, you know?

*sorry these posts are out of sequence. My body aches from the work we've been doing, so I've been smoking a bit more than usual, and I keep missing posts. LOL!:stoned: I am not what one would call a functioning stoner.

That was the case here too.
I understand why he was in such a hurry. I really do. We've been through a lot together, and he was just dying to get settled down with his woman and kids.
Part of the problem is that Papi is such an upstanding trustworthy fellow that he thinks everyone is the same way. He's too trusting, and people who aren't honorable see him coming a mile away. I'm the pitbull in the relationship, but I can only do so much without damaging his pride as a man. So sometimes I have to let him take the lead, even when it doesn't turn out so well.

That is such a cool show! I can't decide whether I want to go period, or funky. I think maybe the attic and the kitchen for funky, and the rest of the house period. I have to have at least one room that reflects my insanity.;)

Hey G/J it's all good ,
Stinkys in the mid. of crazy home remod. stuff too I guess .
Everything you put into it you'll get back out of it x 2 as long as your not in some god forsaken hood .

I bought a lil 1200 sq. ft. place 12 yrs. ago , was in probate causa rednecks fightin over dead money , on the market for over a yr. I stole it for 29,600.00 w/ them eating the points . needed replumbed , windows , and drywall . Put up a garage -n- was just appraised for $165.000
I might have an honest 60,000.00 in it .

Idea for ya too , all the wet plaster here was A.F.U like im seeing in your pics. tell Papi to fir the spots where the plaster is already gone and put 1/2 in. drywall right on top of the old wet plaster = liquid nails -n- long dryall screws bite great into the old lathe . I feel for ya , I didn't have kids like yourself when this kinda shit was going on .

Brooke , Stinky -n- a cpl. others have had good things to say about ya , n love the sense of humor . A much belated welcome from the Crispis' sis .
Peace

Mrs. Greenjeans

Thanks for the plastering advice Crispi! I just read it to Papi, and he's appreciative. And yeah, it's having to figure out how to bathe kiddos and keep them from stepping on nails that makes this more harrowing.

Ahhh, I love my cdot ladyfriends. They are all good people, with lots of knowledge about horticulture as well as life in general. They restore my faith in humankind.

Thank you for the welcome. You've been a little scarce lately, or maybe I was just looking in the wrong places?

Hey greenjeans, sorry re: my late arrival on this thread, you KNOW what stinky's been busy with lol....
My house is 107 years old and was renovated in a half-assed way into a 2-family right after WWII. Seriously, ask the Yeag about how you have to be able to twist yourself into a pretzel just to get up the stairs to my bedroom!
A lot of the problems you are dealing with are already taken care of but it still never ends!
I know the sotry of your realtor and lack of inspection from the email... it happens, whatever, you're a tough chick and will get it sorted out somehow.... for anyone else who is considering buying, GET YOUR OWN REALTOR WITH A BUYER'S AGENT CONTRACT!!!!!!!!!!!
Mine was like a bulldog- his job was to chase papers and keep the sellers and their agent (who was a SLIMEBALL) honest. Worked like a charm. At my inspection, I had him, the sellers agent, a licensed home inspector, and my favorite ex boyfriend who has held a MA general contractors license for over 25 years and is one of the biggest players in real estate development in the valley.
Needless to say, everyone was on thier best behaviour and I got a very nice inspection report to wave at the sellers.
Victorian era houses are amazing, I love them, they are beautfully laid out, and any work you put into them is well worht it in the end!

Hah, I bought a home built in 1913 a few years ago and am also having to deal with the same shit, but not quite as bad as yours sounds. Bought it at an auction and picked it up dirt cheap...have already received offers to mortgage it for 3x's what I paid for it! It was brought up to code in '97 so all the electric is new but I think the electrican must have done the plumbing too! My only real problems with this place is the bathroom plumbing. The shower only trickles out while the bathtub spout works fine for about 4 minutes then it too slows to a trickle. I get around it by siphoning from the nearby sink to fill the tub but eventually and soon will have to gut and replace the bathroom pipes along with the tub, sink and toilet. But until I can save up the funds for it I'll continue siphoning from the sink...lol
Other than that it's a great house and what's even better, it's fully paid for!
