I'm working on making wooden pipe with a long stem (around 9 inches). The stem, made of silver maple, I have completed putting a hole through it for which to inhale through, only thing now is I need some wood for a bowl but I don't know which I should use. I know for a bowl your supposed to use hard woods, but I need some suggestions. Also later I'll post a picture of the stem if anyone show's interest in seeing it

I'm gonna assume you mean to post the picture of the stem so here you go

the string on there is hemp I was using to hold it together. the way I made the hole down the center was split it as close to the center as I could, maple tends to be easier to split, it went of the grain so I had to cut most of what was planned to be the stem off. It was originaly going to be almost 2 feet long. Next on each half I cut out a "channel" for the airflow then put the two halves back together, gluing and using the hemp to hold it while it tried. Later I removed the hemp and rubbed a small amount of wax into the split to help makesure it was air tight. I'm planning on wrapping the stem in wet leather so that when the leather dries it will be nice and tight and make sure it stays together.then I'm gonna put feathers and shit on it ^.^

as for the bowl, no clue yet, figuring it out as I go, but I don't have a lathe
edit: I kept the strings on the ends to help keep it from seperating as it dries as the wood is green wood

basically, my original idea was a peace pipe I got the idea while I was high after using another homemade pipe [attachment=o125509]
that is a cardboard tube from a cheap coat hanger and a metal part of a pen, inspired me to make this ^.^

Yeah, it's harsh as hell too. I'm thinking I might put the criss crossing hemp back on it so it's under the leather and hopefully that pattern will show up through the leather
Also the maple wood is actually out of my back yard from a tree I've played in since I was a small child

Finished!!![attachment=o125971]
Use oak for the bowl, and polish that fucker up real nice ;). Also, do carbs work well in wooden pipes? I've never seen a carb in a wooden or metal pipe--weird.
EDIT: Oh, I see you've finished it. Very nice, I love it. The Native American style to it is real nice too ;). Gives it a nice earthy/mystical feeling to it. Awesome. You should make a bunch of those and sell them ;). I'm sure people will buy them.

That's a pretty cool pipe there.
May I ask how you made the hole for the long stem piece in your first picture that you posted on this thread? I'm just curious. :)

the best part of a tree to use is the part that sometimes you'll see that looks like a freaking tumor on the tree. if you can cut a tree down and hack that part of it off, it'll give some beautiful wood to make a pipe with and it is EXTREMELY hard.
i see your already done, so this is just an FYI for future wood pipe makers.

it took me three days, mainly because I needed a vehicle to get the feathers, beads and leather and I didn't want my father to know about it. Also this pipe is for tobaco I'm gonna make another in the same style for weed so I can use this pipe in public :smokin:

After doing some research I found out how native americans used to do it.
1) Take an easily spilt-able wood, such as maple, clean it of the bark if you wish first
2) Next use a thin sharp knife, I used a razor blade, and start at one end begin working it down, splitting it as close to the center as you can to the center
3) Take the now two halves and carve a channel down the center of each but not so large the sides no longer fit together
4)Now glue/lash the two halves together, use a very small amount of glue, I kept the helmp string on until the glue dried, later I wrapped the stem in wet leather lace tightley as to help hold it together (as leather dries it tightens up)

Oh I see now. I've always wondered now pipe makers make such long holes for their stem pieces. Thanks for the info. I may have to to try this sometime.
